Nancy Schwartzman is a filmmaker, media strategist, and catalyst for social change who believes storytelling and technology can create safer communities for women and girls. She is the director and producer of the documentary films The Line (Media Education Foundation, 2009) and xoxosms (2011), which broadcast on POV. She is currently in production on "Steubenville, Ohio," a feature documentary that explores the gang rape case where hacker culture collided with rape culture.
Schwartzman is also the CEO of the start up Tech 4 Good, LLC., which created the Circle of 6 App. Circle of 6 won the Apps Against Abuse Technology Challenge, a national competition launched in July 2011 by Vice President Joe Biden and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The first safety app of its kind, Circle of 6 is being used by over 100,000 people in 32 countries, and currently localized the United States and New Delhi, India.
As a campaign builder and new media consultant, Schwartzman has worked with films like All of Me (Independent Lens, 2013), Oscar® nominated The Invisible War (Sundance, 2012) and Girl Model (POV, 2011). With each film she matched the right new media platform, messaging and ask to maximize audience engagement and enact policy change. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Wired, Christian Science Monitor, CNN, MTV and more.
Drawing on her experience in the field of transmedia activism and gender-based violence prevention, she is a much sought-after speaker, traveling to colleges, conferences, community centers, high schools and non-profits in the Unites States. She is also a speaker at the United Nations, World Health Organization, Institute of Medicine, TEDxSheffield, DOCNYC, Media that Matters, Sheffield Doc Fest, Nordisk Panorama and colleges and conferences around the world.
